Dick Wakefield

One aspect about baseball that can be beautiful is a batter’s swing. “Sweet swing” is the preferred nomenclature. A cursory search of back issues of Baseball Digest came up with a number of sweet singers. There’s John Olerud, for example, and Billy Williams. Then there’s Dick Wakefield. I knew the name, but didn’t really know his story. Here it is in his own words. Bonus Baby and WWII All-Star, Wake never fulfilled his promise. He was also a lightning rod for controversy. I’m not sure if the war robbed him of his swing or if injuries did him in, but he might be more Clint Hartung than the recently departed Clint Hartung.
